TackChoose is designed to calculate the fastest tack to reach the target. As far as I could check around is the only App/sw-tool providing this precious tool.

If your target is upwind (or even downwind if you don’t have a spi) you must tack, right? Ok, but which tack? The “most tight” tack is also the shortest, but generally is also the slowest. the “widest” is generally the fastest, but also the longest. What about all the intermediate possibilities? The naive sailor choose the shortest possible, the most possible into the wind, because shortest. But is this the best, fastest choice ? No! The smarter sailor look to maximize the VMG (Velocity Made Good). The being the VMG at his possible highest value ensure to reach the target in the shortest possible time. Ok. But to maximize the VMG empirically is a lot of time, a lot of work. You have to span from the wind-tighest angle to 90° to the target, and for every position measure the VMG to finally after the full span (and perhaps some sail change) , to adopt the tack with the highest VMG….! How long it took?

TackChooser avoid you all such work and time.

Once for ever you measure the polar coordinates of your boat. One set (file) for every sail-set you have. In TackChooser you save all these file.

Starting your run, you give to TackChooser speed and direction of the wind, then the coordinates of your target point and finally you choose the polar-coordinate file corresponding to the sail setting that you are currently using. Again you can give the Wps coordinate manually, from a prefilled table or graphically using the App Charting.

After having choose start(it can be the GPS) and the target point, declared the wind and choosen the sail-setting file (and just after that), tap on the menu item “GO”. TackChooser, gives you immediately the fastest tack with infos about the speed and the VMG you are going to have and the distance and time to reach the target. Note that generally the distance on the BT (Best Tack), is larger than the straight distance, but the time to reach the target is shorter than using the shortest tack.
